BE MY RIOT GRRRL
A ZINE BY MARIA AOUAD
Be My Riot Grrrl
This zine is inspired by the many punk feminist zines created during the Riot Grrrl movement. This movement took place in the 1990s, in Olympia, USA and was led by young women wanting to be taken seriously in the punk revolution. This movement inspired and keeps inspiring young female punk musicians – including myself! Many of the powerful and talented women who inspired and led this revolution have inspired me to be the outspoken woman I am today. Therefore, I wanted to make a zine full of some inspiring women in the punk scene. It is very important to me to bring light to the many bands promoting feminist and punk values – anti-capitalist, DIY culture, anti-classist, anti-racist, pro-choice, etc. I thought a zine would be the best medium since it reflects punk culture and adheres to the DIY aspect of the movement. I hope this movement will inspire some young women as much as it inspired me.
